Best Golf Ball Markers

We all need to mark our golf ball on the green, and using a tee peg or a biscuit wrapper just isn’t going to cut it. Finding the best golf ball marker for your game will give you a good feeling when you’re about to putt, and some golf ball markers can even help you hole more putts by getting you lined up better.

A golf ball marker might not be the most exciting or influential piece of golf equipment you ever own, but it’s something you will use on pretty much every hole you ever play, so it’s worth getting it right. Plus, if you find the best golf ball marker for your game, there’s no reason you can’t keep it for the rest of your life.

On the putting green, you’re allowed to lift your ball to clean it, line it up for your putt, and to get it out the way of other players. But if you lift your ball without marking its spot, you will incur a one-shot penalty. That’s why it’s important to use a ball marker to mark the spot where your ball was and will be replaced.

Technically, yes.

The R&A define a ball-marker as “An artificial object when used to mark the spot of your ball to be lifted, such as a tee, a coin, an object made to be a ball-marker or another small piece of equipment.”

In theory, you could mark your ball with anything – a tee peg, a coin, a dog biscuit, a frying pan… – but a ball marker that’s roughly coin-sized will avoid distracting your playing partners and mean you’re not having to move it repeatedly to avoid blocking their putting line.

If you have a lucky coin or similar, use that. If not, one of these golf ball markers might be just what you’re looking for…

Poker chip ball markers can be quite a divisive topic in golf. The pros are that they’re easy to find, both in your pocket and on the green if you’ve walked away to read your putt from another position. The downside is their large size increases the likelihood that they’ll interfere with the putting line of one of your playing partners.

This Callaway Poker Chip Golf Ball Marker offers the best of both worlds. It’s a large poker chip, but with a removable, smaller, magnetic marker in the middle. That way, you can use the poker chip the majority of the time, but pop the smaller marker out for occasions where you want something smaller to avoid disturbing another golfer in your group.

It even comes with a presentation box and drawstring pouch, making it a perfect golf gift.
