The Missouri State Highway Patrol released the name of the suspect involved in a shooting that injured two Callaway County sheriff's deputies Monday.
A news release from the Highway Patrol said Jonathan Beason, 37, of Medina, Texas, died after exchanging gunfire with the two deputies.
As of Monday afternoon, one deputy is out of surgery and the other is scheduled for surgery. The Callaway County Sheriff's Office said both will need extensive time to recover.
The incident closed westbound lanes of Interstate 70 for several hours between Kingdom City and Columbia, and traffic resumed as normal shortly before 10 a.m.
According to the Callaway County Sheriff's Office, a deputy pulled over Beason over just after 3:30 a.m. Monday on I-70 between Kingdom City and Columbia. The deputy learned Beason had multiple felony warrants from out of state, according to a social media post.
A second deputy arrived to help out and while attempting to detain Beason, the sheriff's office said they reported Beason was resisting arrest. A short time later, they reported shots fired, with both deputies being hit by gunfire.
Law enforcement officers from Fulton, Columbia and Boone County arrived on scene to help out, according to the sheriff's office, and the injured deputies were taken to an area hospital.
Beason died at the scene, according to the sheriff's office, but the exact circumstances of the shooting and what happened haven't been released.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control has taken over the investigation.
