State troopers have identified a man shot dead early Monday in an encounter that left two Callaway County deputies wounded and one undergoing emergency surgery.

The Callaway County Sheriff's Office said earlier Monday that two of their deputies were shot on westbound I-70 Monday morning. The Missouri State Highway Patrol later identified the suspect, who was killed by gunfire, as Jonathan A. Beason, 37, of Medina, Texas.

One deputy was in serious condition and underwent emergency surgery Monday morning while the other was stable and set for surgery Monday afternoon, the sheriff's office said.

In a news release, the sheriff's office says a deputy pulled over Beason at mile marker 139 at 3:35 a.m. and a second deputy arrived shortly after.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says in a news release that Beason was fatally shot after exchanging gunfire with the deputies.

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Crystal Kent said Beason had multiple felony warrants out of state.

"When the deputies attempted to take the driver into custody, Callaway County Joint Communications were notified the driver was resisting arrest," Kent said. "Moments later, deputies reported that shots had been fired. Both deputies sustained gunshot wounds during the incident."

Both deputies were taken to a nearby hospital and are stable.

According to the Callaway County Sheriff's Office, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the MSHP, a gun was recovered by investigators at the scene.

Boone and Callaway County sheriff's departments were all on scene along with Fulton and Columbia police to assist after the shooting.

Westbound I-70 in Callaway County was shut down during the investigation. The Missouri State Highway Patrol posted on "X" at 5:06 a.m. that the eastbound lanes of I-70 were back open while westbound traffic is being rerouted at the 144-mile marker.

The MSHP's Division of Drug and Crime Control took over the investigation. According their press release, once the investigation is complete, the reports will be forwarded to the Callaway County prosecuting attorney for review.
