Former X
A former X-Factor contestant has been charged with murder over the death of a nine-month-old girl in the Central West of NSW in 2018.
Mitchell David Callaway was arrested at a house in Bowraville on Thursday morning after an investigation by detectives from Orana Mid-Western Police District.
On Thursday, the 37-year-old appeared in Macksville Local Court, where he was refused bail.
He is due to face court again next week.
The arrest was the culmination of five years of investigations by Strike Force King, which was established to investigate the baby's death five years ago.
About 10am on Monday, July 23, 2018, emergency services were called to a home at Binnaway following reports a nine-month-old girl was unresponsive.
The baby was taken to Coonabarabran Hospital by NSW Ambulance Paramedics and, despite the efforts of medical staff, she died a short time later.
Specialist forensic officers analysed the house, leading police to conclude that the death was suspicious.
Last week, NSW police renewed their calls for information from the community in light of fresh evidence relevant to the case.
After receiving new information, strike force officers executed a crime scene warrant at a home at Binnaway on May 31.
Following further inquiries, detectives arrested Mr Callaway at a home at Bowraville at 9:45am on Thursday.
He was taken to Macksville Police Station and charged with murder.
Mr Callaway competed in season 3 of The X Factor in 2011 before being eliminated in the final showdown to Home and Away star Johnny Ruffo.
He was mentored by singer Natalie Bassingthwaighte, ultimately placing seventh in the competition.
