A traffic stop along Interstate 70 in Callaway County turned deadly early Monday morning when a suspect shot and injured two sheriff's deputies.

According to a release from the Callaway County, Missouri, Sheriff's Office, a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle on I-70 at mile marker 139. A second deputy arrived a short time later to assist.

During the stop, authorities identified the driver as a 37-year-old man from Texas. Dispatch told the deputies the man had multiple felony warrants from out of state.

As the deputies attempted to take the man into custody, dispatch received a message that the man was resisting arrest. Then, moments later, deputies reported shots had been fired.

Both deputies were struck by gunfire.

According to the news release, authorities with the Boone County Sheriff's Office, Fulton Police Department and Columbia Police Department rushed to the scene to help.

The injured deputies were taken to an area hospital where one remains in serious condition and is set to undergo surgery. The other was listed as stable.

The suspect in the investigation was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Callaway County Sheriff's Office has requested the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control step in to handle this investigation.

I-70 was closed near Kingdom City for several hours Monday morning.
