Srixon ZX Prototype Irons Hit the PGA Tour - The Hackers Paradise
Monday, September 9th, marks an exciting day for both golf gear enthusiasts and PGA Tour players. Srixon Golf plans to unveil their brand new irons, for now known as ZX Prototype Irons, on the range in Napa, California at the Procore Championship. Srixon tends to draw intense interest around the time of their biennial iron release. This upcoming cycle is no exception, as we’ve already begun to hear comments and questions from our THP Forum members. The 2023 ZX MKII irons debuted similarly to the ZX Prototype Irons, with the Tour seeing them first in late 2022. Our readers have expressed almost universal love for the ZX MKII series, commenting on their many positive attributes like looks, feel, turf interaction, distance, and forgiveness.
What can we tell about these new irons from Srixon? Unfortunately, not much. As you might notice, the company isn’t even to the point of announcing their official name, though a close look at the pictures above might give you an idea. Visually, we see both the 5 and 7 series irons still seem to have the same general characteristics we’d expect. The 7 appears to be a one-piece CB forging with PureFrame technology. The 5 appears to be a forged cavity back in the “player’s distance” category, again utilizing MainFrame, which was very effective for producing high ball speeds across the face with the ZK MKII series.
While we haven’t seen a 4 series iron yet, it is easy to see the ZX4 MKII’s influence on the cavity design of the ZX Prototype irons. The protruding area of the cavity directly behind the middle of the face is somewhat reminiscent of the ZX4’s cavity, albeit with some differences in shaping. Stay tuned to the THP Forums as we learn more about the Srixon ZX Prototype Irons. We should be able to see them in action very soon, as Srixon believes they’ll see multiple members of their Tour staff make the change quickly.
