One Piece Chapter 1085 Recap & Spoilers: The Death of Nefeltari Cobra

Jul 17, 2023

Chapter 1085 of One Piece reveals a crucial detail about the Nefeltari bloodline -- the very same thing that cost King Cobra's life.

The following contains spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1085, "The Death of Nefeltari Cobra," by Eiichiro Oda, Stephen Paul and Vanessa Satone, available in English from Viz Media.

One Piece's Chapter 1084 finally provides readers with a glimpse of the events that occurred during the most recent Reverie. After arriving at Kamabakka Queendom, Sabo immediately seeks an audience with Dragon and Ivankov. He specifically tells them to not let anyone else overhear their conversation, or a certain person will be put in danger. While the other revolutionary captains are wreaking havoc outside the Pangea Castle, Sabo has infiltrated it on his own. That's where he met Kuma's daughter, Jewelry Bonney. The two make a temporary partnership as they try to evade the palace's security. Almost immediately afterward, the pair separates. Bonney entrusts Kuma's welfare to the Revolutionary Army and heads to Egghead, while Sabo continues to pry inside the castle.

That's when Sabo overhears King Cobra's conversation with the Five Elders. The present king of the Kingdom of Alabasta has sought an audience with them. The king asks them about his ancestor Nefeltari Lily, the monarch during the World Government's establishment. Apparently, there hasn't been any mention of Lily in Alabasta's records despite her being so well known. The Five Elders attempt to brush this off as a victim of time, but King Cobra is quite persistent. He shifts his attention to the meaning behind the "D." He apparently has an 800-year-old letter that has been passed from one king to another, and it holds some clues about it. Just then, Imu appears and the chapter ends.

Chapter 1085 continues the encounter. Seeing Imu sitting on the supposedly empty throne, Nefeltari Cobra is logically shocked, prompting him to ask who the mysterious person is. Interestingly, Cobra seems to have already heard of the name Imu. However, instead of answering him, Imu simply pronounces the messages they are to speak, one of which is a question to Cobra. Before that, however, Imu tells Cobra what he wishes to know. He reveals that the D is the name of those who opposed the Celestial Dragons, though the present bearers of the name are oblivious to what it truly means.

According to Imu, the true cause of the recent chaos is none other than Nefeltari Lily's mistake 800 years ago. It is due to this same mistake that the Poneglyphs have scattered around the world. While Imu keeps referring to it as a mistake, the Celestial Dragon believes that this may not necessarily be the case. The answer to that speculation is undeniably within the letter in King Cobra's possession. Since Cobra has only spoken about Queen Lily of the Nefeltari Dynasty, Imu asks about the proper name of the letter's sender. As such, Cobra realizes that there is no way he is walking out of the room alive.

Fully aware of his situation, King Cobra decides to come clean. He tells them that the full name of the sender is Nefeltari D. Lily. The moment he speaks the truth, Imu attacks him, boring a hole in his stomach. Sabo, who has been watching the events unfold, can no longer remain idle. He steps in the moment Cobra is attacked, shocking even the Five Elders and Imu. The Five Elders immediately activate their fighting forms, though the chapter only reveals silhouettes of them. Meanwhile, Sabo takes on Cobra and attempts to flee, but this is for naught.

Sabo can't flee with Cobra in tow, and he is eventually forced to leave the monarch behind. With his final breath, Cobra asks Sabo to relay a message to Luffy and Vivi. He wants the revolutionary to tell Vivi that she is also a bearer of D. Cobra also relays to Sabo the contents of the letter. Surprisingly, there's another witness to the whole encounter. Wapol, the present king of the Black Drum Kingdom, has seen everything through a peephole and has also learned about the World Government's dark side.

After this, the chapter goes back to the round table. Logically, both Cobra and Wapol are absent from it. They continue to discuss the matters of the world, starting with the independence of the four-nation alliance in North Blue. While that is happening, Shirahoshi and her brothers decide to wait for their father at the Red Port, where no other Celestial Dragon will covet the gigantic mermaid. However, Shirahoshi doesn't wish to leave without first saying her goodbyes to Vivi.

As for Vivi, she has been kidnapped by familiar members of CP0. Even so, she still worries about Shirahoshi's safety. Jabra tells her that the mermaid princess is just fine, while also relaying the events outside. After Sai and Leo have done in St. Charlos, they've supposedly proudly declared themselves to be followers of the Straw Hat Pirates. Fujitora has also apparently helped the Revolutionary Army free the Celestial Dragons' slaves, prompting Ryokugyu to turn against him.

Realizing that the general situation is quite favorable, Vivi finally starts to think about her well-being. If she doesn't do anything, there's a good chance that she will become some Celestial Dragon's pet. Just then, Wapol comes barging in, fleeing for his life. The poor king is still frightened of the things he has recently discovered. Vivi takes the opportunity to escape CP0's clutches. She grabs the raging Wapol as the former villain eats his way outside. Before CP0 realizes Vivi's disappearance, the princess of Alabasta has already made her way outside the castle.

Wapol meets up with his wife Kinderella, who has been patiently waiting for the Reverie to end. However, what she notices is the fact that Wapol has brought with him a beautiful young maiden. Vivi's proclamation of joining Wapol's escape plan doesn't help clear up the queen's misunderstanding. That being said, it's highly reasonable that Wapol is Vivi's gateway to once again sailing the seas of One Piece.
